November 23, 2009 - Saint Gaudens Gold Eagle coins are actually termed “Double Eagles” because they are the second in a series of two $20 gold coins that was produced by the US Mint between 1849 and 1933. The $20 Lady Liberty gold Double Eagle was introduced after the discovery of gold in California in 1849, and it was widely used as currency until the historic gold bullion confiscation of 1933.

President Theodore Roosevelt authorized the creation of a new round of gold Double Eagles, and he hired Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create this coin.
