U.S. Mint to Mix 2013, 2014 Gold Eagle Coins

January 10, 2014 - The U.S. Mint has decided to sell its leftover inventory of 2013-dated gold coins at a 1-to-1 ratio with the 2014-dated coins, according to the Mint’s website. U.S. Mint Precious Metal Group branch chief Jack Szczerban says that authorized purchasers will be able to have orders filled exclusively with 2014 coins until January 20, at which point outgoing shipments will begin containing equal amounts 2013 and 2014 coins until the Mint’s supply of 2013 coins is completely depleted.

U.S. Mint directors reiterated multiple times in 2013 how difficult it was to accurately gauge the number of coins that needed to be minted on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis, and the difficult task was made harder by the wildly fluctuating gold spot price. The U.S. Mint sold 856,500 ounces of gold Eagle coins in 2013, a 14% increase over the previous year’s figures.

Gold-Eagle.org expects 2013-dated Eagles to sell for slightly less than their 2014 counterparts due to collector demand for the newer coins. “Investors can buy the exact same amount of gold for a lower price by opting for the [2013] coins,” said David Brennan, analyst with Gold-Eagle.org. “Unless you are a collector you’d do well to purchase last year’s coins because you’re only going to be offered spot price or slightly above when you sell.”

Gold Eagle sales are most abundant in the first part of each year, as collectors race to update collections and get their hands on first strikes. The U.S. Mint’s slight over-calculation of the number of gold coins needed to finish the year is not unheard of, and for investors who buy gold Eagles strictly for the bullion content the excess supply is more than welcome as it allows them to purchase the 2013 gold Eagle coins at a slightly lower premium.
